Panasonic Europe has today announced the upcoming launch of its TH-65VX100 plasma display - a 65in set that promises to produce the blackest black when it arrives in January 2009.

The TH-65VX100, pictured below, features an all-new plasma display panel that incorporates a "Dynamic Black Layer" at its front. The result, says Panasonic, is a display that can produce a contrast ratio of 60,000:1 - the world's highest as of September 4th, it claims.

Its full-HD resolution (1,920x1,080) is joined by 18-bit digital signal processing and the set takes advantage of a new optical filter to provide a wider than HDTV-standard colour gamut. On paper, it seems Panasonic really believes that this is the set to topple Pioneer's Kuro as the blackest of them all.

The TH-65VX100 will feature four HDMI ports, component and VGA. You won't find standard connectors such as composite video, Panasonic is aiming this set at the high-end enthusiast and expects high-end kit to be used with it. Sadly, that also means there's no built-in tuner for the likes of Freeview or Freesat.

There's no word on pricing, but there will be a 50in model, too, namely the TH-50VX100. It'll arrive slightly later in February but won't be boasting the blackest blacks thanks to its lower contrast ratio of 30,000:1.

Het valt me dan wel weer tegen dat het 50" model niet "het zwartste zwart" heeft (in vergelijking met een Kuro?)

Dat zou zeggen dat Panasonic er, 2 jaar na Kuro dato, nog steeds niet in geslaagd is de Kuro te overtreffen
met de kleinere modellen.  En "30.000:1", dat claimt men toch ook al met bepaalde huidige modellen?

On the way from Panasonic's Professional Displays division are two new plasma screens, designed for high-end home cinemas and pro use. The two models, a 50in and a 65in, offer a wide range of adjustment and picture-boosting technology, and the 65in model has what's claimed to be the world's highest contrast ratio: 60,000:1.

The two new models are the TH-65VX100 (illustrated), which will be on sale in January, and the TH-50VX100, which hits the shops in February, but 'only' has a 30,000:1 contrast ratio.

The two new displays are of course 1080p 1920x1080-pixel models and, Panasonic says, use "enhanced high-quality image technologies accumulated in the development of the Professional Display PF series supplied for many commercial applications including at broadcasting stations and post production houses."

It adds that the screens employ "new-generation plasma display panels (PDP) equipped with a new structure in which a recently-developed 'Dynamic Black Layer' is positioned at the front end of the panel.

"Reducing the amount of predischarge to one-sixth that of the conventional models boosting the contrast ratio to the world's highest at 60,000:1, leading to exceptionally deeper, richer blacks.

"By incorporating the newly-developed phosphor material process technology and optical filter, the advanced plasma displays have extended the HDTV-standard colour gamut and cover almost the entire colour range currently used in digital cinema industries."

The new models have no fewer than 16 adjustment menus, covering parameters such as six gamma curve options and white balance adjustment, while an advanced memory function allows users to name and save settings.

Heb plasma al nooit echt prettig gevonden om naar te kijken (teveel SDE en ik kan het scherm zien knipperen) maar nadat ik de nieuwe LED tv's heb gezien (o.a. van Philips en de nieuwe top-lijn van Sharp) zou ik al helemaal geen plasma meer hebben. Tja, ze zijn goedkoop in deze heel grote maten, maar wie kan nou echt een 65" scherm even makkelijk kwijt in een Nederlandse woonkamer?

Let op mensen: het gaat hier om professionele schermen voor industriële toepassing.
Er zit dus geen tvtuner in en volgens mij ook geen speakers.

Ik vind dat juist een pluspunt omdat ik deze niet gebruik.

Ook heel handig is dat je de inputs met modules kunt afstemmen naar jouw wensen. Dit was tenminste ook met de vorige serie, maar die waren tot nu alleen uit de oude G10 serie.
Je kan dus modules nemen met hdmi en componenten. Wat moet ik in hemelsnaam met bijv 2 scartaansluitingen die op mn tv zitten die ik nooit zal gebruiken!

Ben benieuwd naar de prijs en de prestatie ivm de Kuro 500/600!

Additionally, there were two pleasant surprises which I wasn't expecting: compared to consumer Plasmas, this panel displayed significantly less phosphor trails (green and yellow flashes visible to highly sensitive eyes) and PWM noise (subtle noise added by Plasma panels visible at close range, a very mild side-effect relating to how they draw images).

Dat zal de adviesprijs zijn, en die betaal je eigenlijk nooit. Daarnaast is een prijsval na een tijdje ook wel weer te verwachten. Ik blijf het nieuws omtrent deze plasma iig wel volgen.

Ik denk dat deze panelen volgend jaar toch ook wel gebruikt gaan worden in de consumentenmodellen. Dus er staat ons weer heel wat moois te wachten voor wellicht lagere prijzen als de modellen nu.

Ik had ondertussen alwat meer info verwacht omtrent de 2009 lijn bv van de CES 2009 (January 8-11)

Last year not only saw the showcase of the outstanding 150inch plasma prototype, but Panasonic's current flagship model, the 103″ subtly stole the show proving that it is as flexible as it is incredible. With portrait signage applications and mechanised lifter systems, Panasonic demonstrated that bigger really is better.

The theme continues into 2009 with large format plasma showing interactive capabilities, multiple mounting options and new partner accessories. The rest of their line-up is certainly not forgotten...

The recently launched Full High Definition series will be there in all its glory across a multitude of applications. Enrique Robledo, European Marketing Manager for Professional Displays comments: "2009 is very much the year of applications for us. We have been selling into many vertical markets for some time now, but we want to take the ISE opportunity to really shout about the impressive solutions & wealth of knowledge which we have."

Large screen sizes & interactivity, information mapping & real time solutions for leisure, gaming & a whole host of dynamic signage applications are what we can expect to see from Panasonic next year.

The NeoPDPs will NOT have zero minimum luminance. That's been confirmed by my contact and you best believe that if they were, Panasonic marketing would have been all over it.

The NeoPDPs will NOT be in all Panasonic models for 2009. This was confirmed per Panasonic Japan.

Tentative sizes for the NeoPDPs will be 50 and 65". A 46" model is on the table, however it has not been approved.

Slim NeoPDPs will NOT be cheap. And when I say cheap I mean per the non-NeoPDP lineup. Panasonic is going to charge a premium for these models and I've seen specs for a monitor only type (like the Pioneer Elite Signature series) and one that uses a media receiver. I don't know at this time which will actually come to market. Might be both...it might be one or the other.

A brushed metal bezel is suppose to happen with the NeoPDPs (slim models). So far on the table it's black and aluminum.

One last thing that is very important. Panasonic did not create what they call NeoPDP on their own. Pioneer and Hitachi didn't either. This was a joint venture between all three parties. So to call NeoPDP Panasonic is misleading and a border line lie. The only thing that is going on is Panasonic will be using it's production facilities for the creation of each companies NeoPDP panels.

all NeoPDPs will be 1080p models. Panasonic will have a very "diverse" lineup next year. NeoPDPs will be on the higher end and budget models will be based off of a hybrid of the 800/850 tech and the VX100 tech.

that 5 lumen tech will get Panasonic, Pioneer and Hitachi below the MLL of the 9G Kuros. Of course each company has to implement this capability in their displays as it is not just a given that a panel with 5 lumen tech will automatically get you below the 9G Kuro's MLL.

Pioneer's driver tech for ECC is not in Panasonic's hands. ECC requires 5 lumen tech to be "market ready".

The 65VX100E nails colours in a way Panasonic has never managed before too, producing a vast gamut of colours that allow it to effortlessly mix ultra-rich tones with subtle skin tones, all within the same frame.

The screen's full HD resolution and 18-bit processing also ensure that colour gradations are immaculate.
The 65VX100E's pictures are considerably brighter and more vibrant than those of any previous big-screen Panny plasmas too, especially with the set's Auto Gamma Control feature active.

It's important to stress, too, that although it really bursts into life with hi-def, the 65VX100E is also a superior standard definition performer, upscaling even the dodgiest of digital channels from a Sky receiver with an unusually deft touch. Though if you'd prefer a separate scaler to do this work for you, the 65VX100E handily provides the option to turn its own internal scaler off.
The way the 65VX100E loves both the smaller and the most impactful things in picture quality life makes for a viewing experience so natural, immersive, stable and plain cinematic that it sets new big screen standards.
Is this enough to warrant the £8000 cost? Frankly that's a question only you and your bank manager can answer.

Quick facts about this Pro-plasma...

This full HD 65in screen designed for the money's no object custom install market is Panasonic Professional's premiere screen option. Unless you fancy the £50k 103in model!

The only other plasma model around right now that really deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the 65VX100E is Pioneer's PDP-LX6090, which is 5in smaller and Panasonic consumer's own 65PZ800, which is roughly half the price.
