Wordt het Blu-ray of HD-DVD? (Deel 4)

Gisteren naar de videotheek geweest om een blu-ray te huren (heb de ps3 van mijn broer te leen), en op alle Warner blu-rays staat alléén maar Dolby Digital, niks meer! Dacht ik ook eens om mijn Onkyo 875 goed te kunnen testen. Not, dus!

Is dit met de Nederlands ondertitelde koop-blu-rays ook zo? Dan hoef ik helemaal geen stand-alone speler meer te kopen (enige reden zou het geluid zijn), en kan ik gewoon via mijn htpc gaan!

Wel met de titels van Warner over het algemeen. Sony, FOX en anderen hebben wel vaak (uncompressed) PCM, TrueHD e.d. soundtracks.

Iemand interesse in een nieuwe US 40GB PS3 net uit de states, risicovrij, voor 450 euro?  Ben allang blij met deze prijs!  Meer betalen mag ook...

Komen van een bevriend contact bij www.shopanyamericanstore.com, en komen rechtstreeks van een grote Amerikaanse winkel.  Nadere details heb ik natuurlijk voor geinteresseerden.  Iemand die snel kan beslissen?  450 euro ga je denk ik zo gauw nergens anders tegenkomen voor zo'n multifunctionele, krachtige en updatezekere "Regio A"-speler... (ben echt blij!!  )

Nog wat nuttige info voor de HD-bezitters hier:

- Update 2.10 is beschikbaar voor de PS3.

- Er is weer een BOGOF-actie voor Blu-Ray op www.amazon.com van Fox.  Allemaal "Regio A", dus dat kwam mooi uit...

haha ja klopt maar als ik nu moest kiezen zou ik voor het complete entertainment pakket voor ps3 gaan en voor puur games nog voor de xbox.

Heb de PS3's binnen, en ben nu heerlijk aan het kijken/luisteren naar "Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds: Live at Radio City Music Hall" die ik al 7 weken had liggen.  Updaten naar 2.10 kostte nog geen 10 minuten.

Moet zo weg, kijk vanavond lekker verder...

Crazy End of Year Prices on HD-A30 and HD-A35

With Christmas less than a week away, the pressure is on to get all of your gifts picked out. But there's also pressure on the retailers to move out as much of their merchandise as possible because this is the season when they sell the most of everything.

If you've been following the stories about prices at this site or elsewhere, I'm sure you're already familiar with some of the recent promotions about 10 and 12 movies with an HD DVD player purchase at Amazon and Walmart. Those movie deals are gone for the moment, but they've been replaced by lower prices across the board on HD DVD players. If you made a purchase at Amazon recently, then pay close attention because you might have an opportunity to invoke their price protection policy and take advantage of these new savings.

As I write this, Amazon is carrying the HD-A35 for $299, the HD-A30 for $232, and the HD-A3 for $198.50, and they're offering FREE 1-Day shipping so that you might still get these in time for Christmas.

Looking elsewhere on the web, I also found the HD-A30 for $199 at PCRichard.com, who offers free shipping, but not of the overnight kind. That's right, the HD-A30 for $199. It's only cents more than the HD-A3 at Amazon!

This is ridiculous pricing on the higher-up models. It almost makes me wish I had a second and third HDTV so I could take them up on these deals.

There are going to be a lot of new HD DVD users next week joining the rest of us in the hunt for movies, and my fingers are crossed that we'll see some more movie promotions. Best Buy still has their BOGO (Buy 1 ITC) deal through this week, both online and in-store, and I'm hoping for Amazon and others to come to our rescue.

Warner Bros. Announcement at 2008 CES

Those of you following the format war closely are probably already aware of all the speculation over Warner Bros. announcing their stance on the high-definition disc formats. Much of this hubbub began a few weeks ago when a Business Week article postulated what might happen if Warner chose sides instead of remaining neutral. As the story picked up steam, HD DVD haters assured everyone that Warner would make a major announcement in their favor at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in early January.

Just days after the Business Week article came out, nationally syndicated columnist, Don Lindich, received a very brief clarification from a Warner executive, who reiterated their neutral stance for the forseeable future. Two days later, another Warner executive from half way around the world in Australia echoed the same sentiments.

With CES just a couple of weeks away, Don Lindich again offers up the latest assurance that Warner is not going to do what the HD DVD haters think. Don is among the CES attendees who have received invitations to the HD DVD Promotional Group's press conference at CES. The invitation clearly lists Warner Home Video as one of the presenters, and Don was told by the PR agency handling the event that Warner is showing up to speak. ...

The momentum of the speculation about Warner had never abated in certain circles. One of the explanations given for the Warner executives' comments is that the company would certainly never reveal their plans this far in advance, so it's perfectly natural that they would issue those denials. Fair enough, but let's not forget that a bazillion HD DVD players have been sold in the last few weeks, and that there's a giant with a lot of software buying power about to be awakened in the weeks and months ahead. It would seem logical that if Warner was to choose a side, that they'd wait to see whether these new HD DVD customers materialized or not.

Detractors should also be reminded that Warner is one of the patent holders on HD DVD technology (and Blu-ray too), and this is not a decision they'd make casually. It's highly likely that both sides are constantly wooing Warner for its exclusive affections, and offering a lot of appealing incentives to choose them or at least not to switch the "wrong" side. This must be awesome for Warner.

One thing that enthusiasts on both sides can agree on is that the January 6 press conference will be a big deal — although their fingers will be crossed for opposite reasons.

Het is trouwens wel een zootje bij Warner (mbt Blu-ray discs), na de blunder met Harry Potter (=> HD-DVD's in een Blu-Ray doos) zijn er dus ook problemen met Blade Runner en Terminator 3.
Dit maakt het toch meer risicovol om regio 1 discs te bestellen...

Warner Brothers Blu-ray Blunder... Again

One of the most anticipated releases on Blu-ray this quarter is the Blu-ray release of 'Blade Runner'. Demand for the release has left many retailers sold-out, leaving fans of the iconic Sci-fi film empty-handed. Unfortunately, some fans lucky enough to get a copy have found that the fifth disc is actually the same as the first disc, instead of the being the labeled "Work Print".

Fans are reporting that, while the fifth disc is labeled as the "Work Print", when they play the disc they are finding it to be the "Final Cut" of the movie. To find out if you have the correct version of the film on the fifth disc, play the movie and see which audio options you have in the set-up. If you only have an English track, you're ok. If you see the option for a Dolby TrueHD track, you have a bad disc (only the "Final Cut" has a Dolby TrueHD cut).

Warner Home Video has yet to make an official announcement, and with low supplies, returning for replacement copies might not be an option. We'll keep you updated when we hear from the studio.

Terminator 3 Replacement Program Implemented

Confirming our suspicions, Warner Home Video is taking information to send out replacement discs for the recent Blu-ray release of 'Terminator 3'. When the title is played without the In Movie Experience (IME) activated, the title plays at a maximum resolution of 1080i. Obviously, this is well short of the 1080p presentation promised on the cover. For a replacement disc, contact WHV Customer Support at 1-800-553-6937.

Something else interesting about the title, is that it was supposed to use seamless branching to provide the IME. But, if the non-IME version is 1080i and the IME version is 1080p, that suggest that two encodes of the movie are on disc (similar to 'The Descent') rather than use of seamless branching. That will be something to look for once the replacement discs arrive.

Hmm.. had beiden gelukkig besteld in het HD-DVD formaat.

'k zal Warner's titels niet zomaar in (regiovrije) Blu-Ray kopen want de HD-DVD versie is gelijkwaardig.  HD-DVD's bieden een aantal voordelen namelijk, zeker met een XE1.  Helaas zijn er voor Blu-Ray meer interessante titels beschikbaar.

Door beide formaten te kopen profiteer je dan wel weer van alle beschikbare kortingsacties.

Als alle huidige bestellingen binnen zijn heb ik voor het eerst meer Blu-Ray titels (59) dan HD-DVD's (58).  Qua aantallen dus redelijk formaat-neutraal...

Dat krijg je als de codering niet uniform wordt gehanteerd, en ik dus al een aantal Blu-rays voorbij heb zien komen waarop  "Region 1" stond geprint... 

Blu-ray Disc Encoding

In contrast to DVDs, there are only 3 coding regions for Blu-ray discs: Region A, Region B, and Region C (some studios use Region 1, Region 2, and Region 3). The option of coding a Blu-ray disc depends on the preferences of the production studio. Like DVDs, a Blu-ray disc formatted for one region will not play in another region.

The following list is a general overview of the Blu-ray regions:

REGION B/2 Europe, Greenland, French Territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia, New Zealand
