Panasonic Builds Upon Its Award Winning Line of 1080p Full HD VIERA Series Plasma Televisions

Las Vegas, NV (January 6, 2008) – Panasonic Corporation of North America, the principal U.S. subsidiary of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (NYSE:MC), the industry leader in high definition and Plasma TV, today introduced its 2008 line of Plasma full HD televisions. The VIERA 2008 full HD Plasma series introduces a new screen size - a 46-inch1 class display, complimenting the Panasonic Plasma family of televisions, further strengthening Panasonic's award winning Plasma line-up, which also includes televisions in the 42-inch class, 50-inch class and 58-inch class size. Completing the 2008 Plasma HD line-up are two 720p Plasmas in 42-inch class and 50-inch class screen sizes. The entire VIERA line of HDTVs features a new aesthetic look.

Year after year, Panasonic has brought new picture improving technologies to flat panels and 2008's increased line-up continues that trend. With the digital transition on the horizon and an increased awareness among consumers about high definition, consumers now demand blacker blacks, faster response time and the billions of colors that Panasonic VIERA full HD Plasmas deliver.

"Panasonic's superior picture quality, connectivity and service continues to distinguish the 2008 line, which we have re-branded VIERA. We firmly believe that the television is the center of the living room with an emphasis on family time spent experiencing entertainment together via a variety of audio and visual products," said Dennis Eppel, Vice President, Panasonic Display Products Company. The PZ800 Plasma televisions feature an improved native contrast ratio of 30,000:1; Game Mode; VIERA Link; a PC Input, four HDMI connections and an all new one sheet of glass design concept.

While Panasonic's focus for 2008 is on Full High Definition 1080p Plasma displays, there are two 720p High Definition Plasmas in the 2008 line-up. "Panasonic is very proud of the Concierge Program's acceptance and success," said Eppel. "Panasonic is intensely focused on its commitment to excellence in customer service. The Concierge program is another differentiator in the market, providing the customer with 'peace-of-mind' services. Furthermore, our continuing commitment to Plasma technology is evidenced in the construction of Panasonic's fifth Plasma panel factory in Amagasaki. En Panasonic introduceert een THX Movie Mode:

PANASONIC INCORPORATES THX® CERTIFICATION IN ITS 2008 PZ800 VIERA® HD PLASMA TELEVISION SERIES

Panasonic to Launch "THX Certified Display" Plasma HDTVs in Spring

Las Vegas, NV (January 6, 2008) – Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company unveiled its first THX Certified* Display series of 1080p full HD VIERA Plasma televisions today at the Consumer Electronics Show. The PZ800 series, consisting of the 42-inch class TH-42PZ800, the 46-inch class TH-46PZ800, the 50-inch class TH-50PZ800 and the 58-inch class TH-58PZ800, meets the THX Certified Display specifications, signifying the highest standards of performance and quality. The PZ800 series will be available in the Spring of 2008.

Leveraging its expertise in the cinema, post-production and consumer electronics markets, THX ensures that certified televisions will perform to rigorous standards outlined by the THX Certified Display program. THX certification ensures that high definition (HD) and standard definition content are presented with the correct color, luminance levels and video processing capabilities, regardless of the display technology. In addition, each THX Certified display will feature a proprietary video setting, THX Movie Mode, to recreate the cinema experience of movies on DVD, Blu-ray, HD-DVD and broadcast television in the home. THX Movie mode sets the display's gamma, luminance, color temperature and other settings to match the levels found in the professional post-production studio where movies are produced.

"The THX Certified Display program provides manufacturers a means to differentiate products from competitive offerings and Panasonic is extremely proud that the quality of our Plasma HDTVs meets the rigorous standards necessary for THX Certification and that Panasonic is among the first major consumer electronics companies to achieve certification in the Plasma TV category," said Dennis Eppel, Vice President, Panasonic Display Products Company. "THX is the gold standard in audio and video and it's very satisfying to have our televisions' quality certified by THX. Panasonic and THX share a dedication to creating and providing superior performance, resulting in superior entertainment."

THX works closely with display manufacturers from early design concepts to product rollout. Displays are sent to THX laboratories from the prototype stage, where they run through a series of THX performance tests, including front-of-screen testing and video signal processing analysis. These tests ensure that each display can present all HD and standard definition content to the maximum resolution with correct color and luminance levels.

In addition to the THX Certification, the 2008 PZ800 VIERA series of HD 1080p Plasmas features an improved native contrast ratio of 30,000:1; Game Mode; VIERA Link; a PC Input, four HDMI connections and an all-new-one-sheet- of-glass design concept.

"We are excited to be working with such an industry innovator as Panasonic, with whom we share the common goal of providing the best picture quality possible to the consumer,," said Patrick Dunn, director of display technology at THX Ltd. "THX display certification challenges HDTV makers to push the limits of product design and performance. Our work with Panasonic has resulted in a series of Plasma displays that will be welcome additions to any home theater."

*THX certification is pending final testing and approval by THX, Ltd.

Design Viera plasma PZ800:

'Despite the fact that consumers and videophiles don't agree on a single preferred HDTV technology, Panasonic continues to cater to those who can't live without true blacks and accurate colors with five new lines of Plasmas. In an attempt to help you find just the right size for your setup, Panasonic has added a 46-inch model to some of its lines including the flagship PZ850. In addition to the 46-inch, the top of the line is available in the; 50, 58 and 65-inch varieties. The 850 line is also the first to include IP enabled features like YouTube and Picasa. Like a few other high-end sets -- the PZ850 includes THX display certification, easy access to ISF calibration settings, 30,000:1 contrast, RS-232C, and four HDMI ports. The PZ800 line (pictured) has just about everything the 850 does with the exception of the IP features and the addition of a 42-inch model. These aren't the only options as Panasonic also has the PZ85, PZ80, and PX80 lines, but other than they aren't as good as the 850 and 800, we're hard press to tell them apart. All the new TVs are expected in the spring of 2008 at a currently undisclosed price.'

Volgens D-Nice:

'Speaking only of the 800/850 series, they incorporate a new substrate glass formation and moving the MgO layer (dielectric layer) from above the cells to inside the cells. This creates much improved cell firing luminosity, cell cross talk, and does reduce power usage. This new design works just like Pioneer's crystal emissive layer.

From what I've been told, these improvement provide considerably more performance in daylight conditions. On the "theater lighting" side, the new design is less of an improvement but will place the minimum luminance level near the 0.009ftl level. The will definitely be "good enough" for the value minded customer......but it isn't 0.004ftl 1080p 8G Kuro level.....and God forbid the 9G Kuros.'

Even verder schrijft hij dat je in daglichtcondities geen verschil met een Pioneer Kuro zult zien....

'One note first, however. We liked the company's anti-glare screen from last year, found on the TH-50PX77U for example, but for 2008 Panasonic dropped it in favor of a new anti-reflective screen that's used throughout the line. We're anxious to test one of these models to see how the new screen performs.'
