Toch maar voor beide gekozen. Ik zie nog geen duidelijke winnaar op korte termijn. Hoewel ik hoop op HD-DVD ivm de regio-codering...

In a huge blow to Toshiba, Universal, and the rest of the HD DVD devotees, rental giant Blockbuster has decided to stock only Blu-ray discs in the vast majority of its nationwide locations, although HD DVD titles will continue to be offered online and in the 250 (out of 1,450) stores that have been testing both formats since last year. Blockbuster VP Matthew Smith revealed to the AP that the decision to go with Blu-ray -- which will reportedly be announced tomorrow -- stemmed from an overwhelming customer preference for those titles in the test markets, accounting for over 70% of all HD discs rented. Interestingly enough, it seems that content -- and not price -- was the deciding factor for consumers, with Blu-ray-only hits such as the Spiderman and Pirates of the Caribbean films apparently outmatching equivalent HD DVD exclusives. While it's still a little too soon to declare Blu-ray the outright winner, this Blockbuster decision only contributes to the momentum that Sony's darling has had of late -- momentum that at this point, might be too difficult for the other guys to counter.

Nee. Ik bedoel te zeggen, dat menigeen die blu ray neemt na een tijdje merkt dat hd dvd gewoon ernaast blijft en omdat je dan bepaalde titels nog steeds niet op blu ray kunt krijgen je uiteindelijk niet om hd dvd heen kunt.

Kijk, daar zit ik nou ook op te wachten. Ik hoef geen brander, gewoon een low-cost Blu Ray speler om in mijn HTPC in te bouwen. De gleuf is al vrij in mijn HTPC...

ik denk dat beide formaten blijven. vooral omdat je nu nog steeds voor de ene mooie film hd moet hebben en voor een ander blu-ray. en als de grote film maatschappijen in hun kampen blijven staan dan zal dit ook wel zo blijven. en ik zie t ook niet echt als een probleem. misschien praten we over een paar jaar wel niet meer over een hd-dvd of een blu-ray disc maar heten ze dan gewoon dualdisc ofzo aangezien er ook al dual spelers aankomen.

Starz Home Entertainment Announces Blu-ray Support with 'Masters of Horror'

Blu-ray has an unexpected new backer in the high-def format war, with Starz Home Entertainment announcing exclusive support of the format with its first release 'Masters of Horror.'

The news came today from the Sixth Annual Home Entertainment Summit, held in Century City, California, where Starz Home Entertainment President Bill Clark revealed at a press conference that the network would begin releasing its first Blu-ray-exclusive titles this fall.

For its maiden release, Starz will unleash the popular made-for-cable horror anthology 'Masters of Horror' in the fourth quarter of 2007. Exact pricing, supplemental details and street date have not yet been announced.

Other Starz catalog releases are set to follow 'Horror' in the coming months, although no other titles were announced at the Summit.

The news is even more noteworthy for Blu-ray as Starz controls the home video catalog of Anchor Bay Entertainment, one of the most popular suppliers of independent genre titles on standard-def DVD. Among the classics in the Anchor Bay library include 'Halloween,' 'The Evil Dead,' 'Re-Animator and the original 'Night of the Living Dead.' Should 'Masters of Horror' on Blu-ray score with consumers, it seems likely that at least some of these genre staples would follow.

Clark went on to say that the company has no current plans to release on rival next-gen format HD DVD.

'Masters of Horror' -- along with all future Starz Blu-ray releases -- are set to be distributed under the MGM Home Entertainment banner.

Sergio Leone Anthology' Leads Fourth Quarter MGM Blu-ray Revival

After an absence of several months from the next-gen scene, MGM Home Entertainment is renewing its Blu-ray commitment with a wave of nearly a dozen new titles set for release in the fourth quarter.

Though an early proponent of Blu-ray (along with parent distributor Fox Home Entertainment), MGM has not released a title on the format since 'Hoosiers' in early March. The studio has now finally broken their silence with a pledge of at least ten to twelve new Blu-ray releases by the end of 2007.

Only one specific title was revealed -- a 'Sergio Leone Anthology' box set, featuring four of the director's classic titles, including 'A Fistful of Dollars,' 'For a Few Dollars More,' 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' and 'Duck, You Sucker.'

No official street date or spec information was given for the 'Sergio Leone Anthology,' nor any of MGM's other planned 2007 Blu-ray titles, but we'll certainly keep you posted as details are confirmed.
