It's been a while, but this Rotel is well worth the wait. It's a movie machine par excellence



A quick search on www.whathifi.com reveals a grand total of zero Rotel multichannel amplifiers listed. It's been an awfully long time since we tested a Rotel home cinema machine, so the arrival of the RSX-1550 (the opening act in a pretty extensive new range of surround sound equipment) caused a little frisson of excitement in our listening rooms.

What has Rotel been doing all this time – getting everything just so or just sitting on its hands?

A glance at the spec-sheet is inconclusive. Decoding for high-definiiton audio soundtracks is on board, as is video upscaling all the way to 1080p.

The RSX-1550 is second-, third-, and fourth-zone capable, and is packing an ample 75 watts per channel, but goes without some of the niceties the prospective owner of a £1400 cinema receiver might demand as their right.

Seven channels of amplification, for instance – the 5.1 RSX-1550 must integrate a two-channel power amp to provide 7.1 sound. Ethernet capability is a feature some rivals include but the Rotel disdains, as is mic-driven set-up procedure.

It's simple, thanks to the logical remote and straightforward on-screen menus, to get the best from the '1550 with a sound pressure level metre but at this price-point a lot of customers like to be pampered by their purchase.         

We like the minimalist looks
Visually, though, we think the Rotel is right on the money – particularly in the black finish of our review machine. Build is smooth and substantial, the fascia's not overburdened with buttons and the display, while perfectly legible, doesn't shout.

If you're generally going to use your home cinema receiver to listen to multichannel movie soundtracks – and at this price it's an assumption we're relaxed about making – then the RSX-1550 warrants very serious consideration.

Decoding and amplifying the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack to Iron Man on Blu-ray, the Rotel impresses mightily with the implacable solidity and authority of its sound.

Low frequency stuff – and there's plenty – is straight-edged, controlled and above all unyieldingly punchy, even as dialogue is distinct and well defined.

A convincingly explicit soundstage
Effects are steered rapidly and without alarms, while flying shrapnel and what-have-you at the top of the frequency range is crisply executed without veering into harshness. The soundstage the '1550 creates is convincingly explicit, and its dynamic credentials are undoubted.

Multichannel music is a slightly more qualified success: the Rotel has no problems describing Foo Fighters Live at Wembley Stadium in detail, but doesn't generate quite the giddy atmosphere some competitors can manage.

The same is true of music in stereo – the '1550 is as sturdy as ever playing Animal Collective's My Girls, but lacks the last scintilla of excitement.   

So if you value movie soundtrack quality – burly, deft and disciplined movie soundtrack quality – over some specification shortcomings, then add this impressive new Rotel to your audition list pronto. If you can't get past the holes in the spec, well, it's not like you're short of alternatives.

Nu weet ik niet of de tests van What HiFi nu echt toonaangevend zijn, maar dit lijkt mij een aardig alternatief voor een Denon 3808... Of is dit niet met elkaar vergelijkbaar?

Ja en nee, zoals het artikel al zegt.

De 3808 heeft zaken als auto setup en auto room EQ en ethernet streaming. Dat heeft de Rotel weer niet.

Maar de Rotel is een veel muzikalere versterker en vooral in Stereo veel beter. Ik heb diverse Denon's en Rotels gehad. Alhoewel Denon zich vanaf de 3806 op dit gebied behoorlijk heeft verbeterd, is het gat wel vrij groot.

Dus kijk je veel films en wil je de versterker niet met de hand inregelen, dan kies je de 3808.
Is muziek je prioriteit kan de Rotel een mooi alternatief zijn.

Overigens zou ik dan zelf voor de RSX-1560 kiezen, die de digitale versterkermodules bevat. Dat schijnt helemaal een topper te zijn en ook geschikt om wat moeilijkere speakers aan te sturen als bijvoorbeeld de Focal Electra 1027BE.

Ok, dank voor je reactie.
Ik vind het handmatig instellen niet zo'n probleem, meerdere ruimtes aansturen doe ik er niet mee maar ik ga er wel straks een media player op aansluiten. Maar omdat dit gewoon via HDMI gaat lopen zal ik de ethernet streaming ook niet echt nodig hebben. Ik kijk echter wel veel films, maar ook een goed stereo beeld is belangrijk. En oh ja..... ik heb ook nog een budget...... er moet namelijk ook nog een nieuwe TV en BR speler komen...
Volgens mij schiet de RSX-1560 direct weer een paar honderd euro omhoog. Ik denk trouwens dat ik niet zulke moeilijke speakers heb staan, het zijn Audio Physics Yara's (4 x plus centre) en een rel quake subwoofer.

Qua afwerking is er niets mis mee hoor. De 876 is overigens een Receiver met een officiële winkelprijs van 1400 euro, die doet echt niet onder voor een Denon of Marantz van dezelfde prijsklasse. Onkyo is gewoon meer HT gericht, Denon en Marantz neigen weer meer naar Stereo.
