Philips' latest LCD TV is so stuffed full of new technologies that it's hard to know where to start. ClearLCD, Pixel Plus 3 HD, Ambilight Surround... every one of these new tricks has the potential to turn the 42PF9831D into something truly special. Or could it be that in delivering such an 'everything but the kitchen sink' TV Philips has overstretched itself and made a TV that's jack of all trades but master of none?

As you start setting the 42PF9831D up, it's the Ambilight Surround system that first makes its presence felt, blaring out coloured light from all four sides of the 42PF9831D rather than just the left and right as happens with former Ambilight systems. Philips has even built white 'wings' on each of the set's sides so the Ambilight system has something to reflect off even if you don't mount the TV on or near a wall.

Able to deliver a light the TV calculates is most sympathetic to the picture's colour content, Ambilight might sound gimmicky, but it really does deliver on its promise of a more immersive and relaxing viewing experience. As well as helping make the 42PF9831D one of the most extravagant LCD designs yet.
While Ambilight might be the most in-your-face of Philips's new features, arguably the most important is ClearLCD. This is a completely new system for improving LCD's motion handling issues, and it's comprised of two main parts. First, a Dimmable Scanning Backlight (DSB) made using new hot cathode fluorescent lamps replaces the single 'always on' backlight of standard LCD TVs, allowing pixels to be lit progressively and for a shorter period of time so that fast-moving objects cause less picture problems.
Second, the voltage applied to the screen's liquid crystals has been increased so that they respond more quickly to rapid changes in the picture content.

Pixel Plus 3 HD meanwhile, represents the most up-to-date version of Philips' now legendary image processing system, with the latest enhancements offering supposedly improved noise reduction and better colours. This is, of course, on top of the all-digital native HD processing and fine detail boosting that so defined the previous Pixel Plus generations.
After all these high-falutin innovations, it's almost a relief to get back to something more basic in the form of the 42PF9831D's connections - even though these connections are actually anything but basic.
The presence of two HDMIs, for instance, would be a real highlight on most TVs. But on this Philips they have to share the limelight with a PC jack and such multimedia oddities as an Ethernet jack (for streaming from a PC), a 7-in-1 multimedia card slot for direct playback of files stored on multimedia cards, and even USB ports for playing files from USB storage devices.
Compatible file formats meanwhile, aren't restricted to the usual JPEG/MPEG4 efforts, as MP3, MP3 Pro, LPCM, MPEG1, MPEG2, DIVX and XVID are also catered for.

Performance
It's a testament to the 42PF9831D's truly uncompromising nature that there are actually reams more features we could go into, including a built-in digital tuner and an 'Active Control' picture assessment system. But really it's high time we found out how Philips' innovations affect the TV's performance.
The short answer is that they work wonders. We aren't prone to sweeping statements, but here we really do think that the 42PF9831D's high definition pictures are the finest we've seen.
The first thing that makes them so outstanding is their outrageous sharpness, as Pixel Plus 3 HD actually manages to make high definition look even more detailed than it is naturally. No other TV before has thus so successfully created a sense that you're gawping at another real world inside your telly rather than just watching a pre-recorded TV picture.
Even better, this increase in HD sharpness is delivered without seemingly any attendant video noise, showing that unlike early versions of Pixel Plus, this latest incarnation can be as subtle as it is potent.
Although processing power limitations mean the Dimming Scannable Backlight part of ClearLCD is inactive during HD viewing, the 42PF9831D's HD pictures nonetheless enjoy superb black levels by LCD standards. These enrich even the very darkest pictures with a sense of scale and depth that's lost on most LCD rivals.,p> Add to this already heady brew some startlingly vibrant but almost always accurately toned colours and you should be starting to understand just why we rate the 42PF9831D's HD performance so highly.
The set isn't only good with HD, either. For the 42PF9831D also proves adept at drastically sharpening up standard definition fare without the grainy side effects seen with previous Pixel Plus incarnations.
In fact, there's really only one thing about the 42PF9831D's images that irritates: the Digital Natural Motion processing for making motion look smoother. It certainly does as billed, but only at the expense of some pretty overt shimmering and flickering artefacts. But hey - if you dislike it as much as we do, Philips has thankfully provided the option to simply turn this element of the processing off.
Remarkably the 42PF9831D is almost as assured sonically as it is with its pictures. The amount of sheer power available is outstanding, helping the set produce a wide, seamless soundstage that's as at home with deep bass rumbles as it is with the sort of treble details that really matter.

Verdict

We guess we need some kind of reality check here based around the 42PF9831D's rather hefty £3,500 price tag. In other words, it will simply be too expensive for many people to contemplate. But if you are lucky enough to have such a sum to spare, you can rest assured that the 42PF9831D justifies every penny of its expense - and then some.

Wat een standaard: "processing power limitations mean the Dimming Scannable Backlight part of ClearLCD is inactive during HD viewing".

heb net wat gegoogled;

If it doesn't make sense and it ain't simple, it must be a Philips!
