Kino On Video To Release, On VHS AND DVD, The 2001 Cannes Grand- Prize Jury Winner The Piano Teacher

Kino on Video is proud to announce that on November 5th, 2002, it will release on VHS and DVD Michael Haneke's The Piano Teacher, starring Isabelle Huppert and Benoit Magimel - Winners of the Best Actress and Best Actor awards at the Cannes Film Festival in 2001.

Written and directed by Michael Haneke (Code Unknown, Funny Games) and based on a novel by Alfred Jelinek, The Piano Teacher has been released to rave reviews and nationwide critical accolades, grossing over $1,000,000 in its North- American theatrical run. As of this date, Michael Haneke's "fascinating tale" (Richard Corliss, Time Magazine) ranks as one of the 10 highest grossing foreign films released this year in North America.

The Piano Teacher tells the story of Erika Kohut (Isabelle Huppert), a demanding piano professor who shares a Vienna apartment with her overprotective mother (Annie Girardot). In her early forties and single, Erika's detached façade and cold manner hide a deeply conflicted woman who finds solace in visits to sex shops and in masochistic experimentation.

Erika's emotional life begins its undoing when she accepts mentoring a new student, the talented and handsome Walter (Benoit Magimel). As he professes a desperate love for her, Walter allows Erika to use him as a vehicle for her most secret and unfulfilled fantasies. Both shocked and still captivated with Erika, Walter slowly embraces his own obsession with her, advancing a relationship that will slowly lead them to the brink of violence and emotional disarray.

Hailed by the Los Angeles times "as a powerful portrait," The Piano Teacher presents "a tour de force role for Isabelle Huppert" (J. Hoberman, The Village Voice) and "one of her [Isabelle Huppert] greatest screen performances." (Stephen Holden, The New York Times).

Among the world's most acclaimed and beloved actresses, Isabelle Huppert has been a leading star in French Cinema, acting in over 60 films and receiving innumerable international awards. She has worked with some of the most important French and international directors, including Jean- Luc Godard (Godard's Passion), Claude Chabrol (Nightcap, Madame Bovary), Benoit Jacquot (The School of Flesh), Hal Hartley (Amateur), Michael Cimino (Heaven's Gate) and Curtis Hanson (The Bedroom Window).

Born in Munich, director Michael Haneke studied philosophy, psychology and theatre in Vienna before becoming a filmmaker. Haneke has been praised by the international critics for his uncompromising approach to storytelling and for his restrained use of the medium. His other films include the Kino on Video release Code Unknown, starring Juliette Binoche, as well as Funny Games and "The Seventh Continent."

With The Piano Teacher, Michael Haneke and Isabelle Huppert created not only an intensely vivid psychological portray, but also confirmed their status as two of the leading contemporary European artists.
