Iranian filmmaker Tahmineh Milani became a cause celebre when she was imprisoned last year for her daring and controversial work. The Hidden Half What if your wife is your enemy? The Hidden Half provocatively and brilliantly explores that question, in a daring morality tale set in modern Iran. The President sends Khosro to look in on a female political prisoner awaiting execution. She is known for her involvement with militant left-wing groups that supported the 1979 Revolution, but opposed the hardcore Islamic fundamentalism that emerged in its wake. In his hotel room, Khosro opens his suitcase to discover a long letter from his wife, Fereshteh. This letter reveals that Fereshteh was a member of many of the same groups as the woman on death row. The Hidden Half is a subtle and moving film about family and national ties. The film opens a window on rarely seen aspects of Iranian culture, and provides uncanny resonance to current events.
