HD-DVD In Trouble As Blu-ray Gains Momentum

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that HD-DVD's pre-Christmas release might not make as big of a splash as once thought. The high-definition disc format backed by Toshiba suffered a loss of support from 20th Century Fox last week and The Reporter is suggesting that the other two Hollywood studios now backing HD-DVD are getting wedding day jitters.

HD-DVD has some distinct advantages, including a superior name. Everyone in the world knows what a DVD is. They also know what HDTV is. The marriage of the two is a natural. One thing that consumers find unnatural and even repulsive is the idea of a format war and it seems Hollywood studio execs have learned their lessons from the Beta-VHS and SACD-DVD-Audio battles. In the SACD-DVD-Audio battle, consumers and entertainment executives learned it is possible for all parties involved to lose. Consumers hold the power and they want one HDTV disc format and they will spend for it.

The process of getting a movie from its archive to a Blu-ray or HD-DVD disc isn't rocket science. Movies are normally stored on D-5 master tapes and require a relatively simple down-conversion to get to an accepted HDTV format like 720p or 1080i. The audio for most movies made after 1990 or movies that have been released on DVD is mixed for 5.1 home theater systems. Mixing and audio mastering houses can fine-tune soundtracks for movies in surround in a matter of weeks. All of this adds up to a likely pre-holiday launch for one or both formats.

Now is the time the Blu-ray camp needs to make friends and influence people at Toshiba and the HD-DVD group. Months ago, there were talks to merge the two formats. Because the next generation Playstation is based on Blu-ray, that format folding was unlikely. Now they have the momentum. Perhaps for a taste of the royalty stream, Toshiba and friends will join forces with Sony and the Blu-ray camp. It is what consumers want and they have their Platinum cards cocked and loaded to pump more money into the system than the studios have ever seen before.

Toch heeft de naam "Blue Ray" ook voordelen.
HD-DVD lijkt een simpele upgrade van een DVD schijfje.
Blue Ray is een nieuwe naam, nieuw (beter?) logo. Blue Ray zal het uiteindelijk winnen denk ik door de pc industrie.
Mensen branden liever 25GB dan 15 GB. Dus kopen ze ook een Speler die dat formaat ondersteund.

HD-DVD is leuk, maar BlueRay is al een stap verder. Waarom niet beter/meer nemen als dat beschikbaar is?
Al dat gezeur tussen formaten door fabrikanten. Achja.. het gaat niet om de consument... het gaat om geld

Het lijkt mij ook geen handige beslissing van Intel en Microsoft. Maar goed, tot nu toe hebben deze bedrijven zich "aardig" weten te redden door de jaren heen met "stomme beslissingen" dus ja... over stomme beslissingen gesproken, voor welk kamp gaat Apple?

Ach wat is goede kant...hun dvd authoring software DVD studio Pro ondersteund vooralsnog alleen HD-DVD
Maar geruchten gaan dat de nieuwe Powermacs uitgerust gaan worden met een blue-ray brander.

De joint-venture voor opslagtechnologie van Toshiba en Samsung, TSST, heeft vandaag de eerste 'slimline'-HD-DVD-drive voor laptops aangekondigd, de TS-L802A. De drive kan naast het lezen van HD-DVD-schijfjes, zowel dvd's als cd's lezen en schrijven. Volgende maand wordt de slechts 12,7 mm hoge drive op de Ceatec-tentoonstelling in Tokyo tentoongesteld, samen met een nieuw lcd-scherm die de hdtv-resolutie van 1920x1080 ondersteunt. De noviteiten zullen te bewonderen zijn als toekomstige feautures van Toshiba's Qosmio-notebook. In december zal TSST proefspelers aan andere fabrikanten ter beschikking stellen; volgend jaar zal de verkoop beginnen, onder andere door de aanwezigheid in Toshiba's Qosmio-notebook. De drive zal in eerste instantie alleen in Japan verkrijgbaar zijn. Het is nog onbekend wanneer de Europese markt aangeboord zal worden.

Zwaargewichten Microsoft en Intel hebben besloten zich te
scharen achter de hd-dvd-standaard.

Zou dat wellicht te maken hebben met de 'rode' laser versie van de HD-DVD standaard. Die zal qua kosten veel goedkoper zijn dan de versie met de 'blauwe' laser.
Waren toch ook al geruchten dat de PS3 vrij duur zou worden door het dure Blue-Ray loopwerk. Qua kosten zal een blauwe laser HD-DVD drive ook wel niet veel goedkoper zijn.

Ik denk dat Microsoft HD-DVD ondersteund omdat de Playstation 3 Blue-Ray ondersteund. Als uiteindelijk HD-DVD de winnaar is dan gaat Sony daar met de Playstation 3 lelijk onderuit... Een goede reden om dan alsnog te kiezen voor een Xbox 360 (die in een later statdium misschien een HD-DVD drive zal bevatten)...

PALO ALTO, Calif. and AUSTIN, Texas, September 29 - Worldwide computer leaders and Blu-ray Disc Association members, Dell, and Hewlett Packard, today addressed the inaccurate information cited by Microsoft and Intel regarding the Blu-ray Disc format.

"From a PC end-user perspective, Blu-ray is a superior format. It offers 67-150% more storage capacity, higher transfer rates, slim-line notebook compatibility, broadband connectivity and a proven interactive layer with BD- Java(TM)," said Maureen Weber, General Manager of Hewlett Packard's Personal Storage Business. "The technical merits and consumer benefits of Blu-ray Disc make it the ideal solution for HP's customers."

Virtually every computer company that has expressed a preference for a high definition disc format has chosen Blu-ray Disc as the superior format for computer platforms and applications. Top-tier computer brands supporting Blu- ray Disc include, among others, Dell, Hewlett Packard, Panasonic, Sony and LG.

"Every computer manufacturer in the BDA carefully reviewed both formats and ultimately chose Blu-ray as the superior solution for meeting customer demands and providing the best possible end-user experience," said Weber. "It is surprising that Tuesday's announcement is not aligned with that of the vast majority of the computer industry and is contrary to our consumer research."

Microsoft and Intel's announcement erroneously indicates that HD-DVD has an advantage in a number of areas. To set the record straight, here are the facts:

Capacity: Blu-ray Disc's capacity is 50GB. This will be available at launch for BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE. This is 67% more than HD-DVD's 30GB ROM capacity and 150% more than its recordable storage capacity -- a critical issue for computer users.

Managed copy: Managed Copy is not a function of the optical disc format, but a function of the content protection system. The AACS content protection system, which is used by both Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD, enables managed copy and network streaming functionality. It is not format specific.

Hybrid Disc: Blu-ray Disc was the first format to introduce a hybrid disc that could hold both high and standard definition versions of a movie on a single disc. The Blu-ray Hybrid Disc is the more elegant solution as it holds both versions of the film on the same side of the disc, which provides for easy labeling and greater ease of use for consumers.

Backward Compatibility: Blu-ray Disc players and recorders can and will support DVDs through the addition of red lasers in the hardware. In order to be backward compatible with DVD, HD-DVD must also include a red laser.

Interactivity: Blu-ray disc is built on BD-Java(TM), which leverages years of industry investment and experience in the set-top box, PC, and cell phone industries. BD-JavaTM provides a mature, robust platform for authoring and delivering unprecedented interactive capabilities to the user for movies, music, and games. BD-Java was selected over iHD, the developmental Microsoft technology used in HD-DVD. The BDA carefully compared both iHD and BD-J, and concluded that iHD didn't go far enough in providing a compelling feature set beyond DVD, while BD-J offered studios a much richer palette for providing a compelling interactive HD experience for consumers, particularly when a player is connected to a network.

"We are actively engaged with our customers who continue to tell us that features such as capacity, advanced interactivity, and industry wide support are of utmost importance when considering new optical solutions," said Kevin Kettler, Chief Technology Officer, Dell, Inc. "Based on this feedback and a comparison of the two formats, Dell has no doubt that Blu-ray Disc best meets the needs of computer users and provides the type of open industry standards needed to drive innovation and growth of the format across all platforms -- consumer electronic, personal computers and gaming consoles."

Paramount Pictures heeft aangekondigd dat het zijn toekomstige films niet zal beperken tot één formaat, maar zowel op HD DVD als op Blu-ray-schijfjes zal uitbrengen. Het bedrijf is hiermee de eerste filmmaatschappij die beide standaarden zal ondersteunen. Waarschijnlijk zal de beslissing hiervoor onder andere gemotiveerd zijn door de wetenschap dat de kans op een uniforme standaard voor de dvd-opvolger nihil is. Tot voor kort had Paramount zijn steun voor het HD DVD-formaat uitgesproken, maar daar stapt het bedrijf nu dus gedeeltelijk van af. Andere HD DVD-fans zijn te vinden bij Warner Brothers en Universal, terwijl Sony, Disney en 20th Century Fox hun geld op Blu-ray zetten. Het is echter niet ondenkbaar dat andere maatschappijen het voorbeeld van Paramount gaan volgen, waarna het uiteindelijk de consument zal zijn die beslist welke standaard de markt verovert. Het feit dat Sony de Blu-ray-technologie in zijn Playstation 3-console zal implementeren, iets wat ook bij de beslissing van Paramount meespeelde volgens directeur Thomas Lesinsky, zal daar vermoedelijk een belangrijke invloed op hebben.
