SpectraDisc Corporation reported it has been issued an additional U.S. Patent #6,343,063 for "Machine-Readable Optical Disc with Reading-Inhibit Agent."

SpectraDisc is spin-out company of Spectra Systems Corporation that has developed a limited-play digital disc suitable for mass manufacturing and distribution. The limited-play disc consists of a DVD or CD that can only be read or played for a prescribed period of time after opening the package. The duration of play can be controlled from minutes to weeks by modifying the composition of the coating materials.

Nabil M. Lawandy, Ph.D., CEO of SpectraDisc, stated, "This patent was of particular importance to us because it both supports all methods relating to the use of the read out laser to affect the limited play mechanism as well as our approach to low cost packaging of the disc."

The patent covers the use of a barrier layer that preserves the playability of the disc throughout the distribution chain. Once the consumer removes the barrier packaging, the limited duration in playtime begins.

Jeetje, de zwarte pagina in de DVD geschiedenis van Divx (niet de MPEG4 codec) is net goed en wel omgeslagen (Divx bestaat niet meer) of ze komen alweer met hetzelfde idee.

Het is alleen handig om bij de verhuur toe te passen, dan hoef je de DVD niet meer terug te brengen, maar mag je hem gewoon in de vuilnisbak gooien. Kun je nagaan hoeveel exemplaren een videotheek dan zou moeten hebben  :o Zal wel aan mij liggen, maar ik snap het niet.

Kun je nagaan hoe laag de kosten zijn om een cd of dvd te persen als ze dit soort dingen serieus gaan overwegen!

De kosten van het "persen" zijn al tijden laag, mits de oplage maar groot genoeg is. Helaas past dit soort initiatieven perfect in de plannen van van de uitgevers om de consumenten tot op de laatste cent uit te melken. Wat te doen wanneer deze rommel in de winkel komt: niet kopen en iedereen in je omgeving afraden om het te kopen. Dat, of een waterdichte hack vinden, zoals prima gelukt is met het onzalige 2View idee. Effectieve limited play media zijn zo ongeveer de heilige graal in uitgeverland. En als dat niet lukt, dan proberen ze de consument gewoon een loer te draaien met 40 verschillende versies van 1 film. Wat las ik laatst? "Remember: the button says "play" not "pay""
