Samsung has today taken the wraps of the world's first 40in screen using Organic Light-emitting Diode (OLED) technology – and announced that it intends to use OLED to make 'ultra-slim, ultra-sharp large TVs'.

The Samsung OLED is the world's first single-sheet, 40-inch active matrix (AM) array for emissive flat panel TV applications. It carries a wide screen pixel format of 1280x800 (WXGA) driven by an amorphous silicon (a-Si) AM backplane to permit – claims Samsung - faster video response times with low power consumption.

The 40in OLED has come from Samsung's 4th generation OLED production line, with a mother-glass size of 730mm x 920mm, and claims to offer all the typical OLED benefits (wide viewing angle, thin package size, no colour filter, no backlight, and potentially enormous production infrastructure advantages courtesy of the a-Si technique not limiting production sizes in the same way polysilicon technologies do).

Other interesting specs on the new OLED include a huge claimed contrast ratio of 5000:1, brightness of 600nits, and the potential for it to be used in a TV as thin as 3cm.
