Seven Samurai en Hidden Fortress

Na ontzettend veel te hebben gelezen over deze 2 films heb ik ze dan toch maar besteld (Criterions)!!.


Volgens de diverse sites die ik lees moeten dit superfilms zijn, heeft iemand op dit forum ze ooit al gezien of in bezit?

Ik heb "Seven Samurai". Geweldige film, waardoor vele filmmakers in latere jaren zijn beïnvloed. Velen beweren dat het de beste film van Kurosawa is, maar daar kun je over twisten. Overigens wordt de film opnieuw uitgebracht:

HOLLYWOOD (Zap2it.com) - Cowboy Pictures partners Noah Cowan and John Vanco and Janus Films' Peter Becker announced that their recently formed alliance will continue this summer with the theatrical re-release of what is considered to be the most acclaimed of Akira Kurosawa's films, "The Seven Samurai" (1953).

The re-release will feature the first new prints of the full-length feature in decades, including completely new subtitles by renowned Japanese film authority and translator Linda Hoaglund. National rollout will follow through the fall and winter.

Cowboy will simultaneously tour a retrospective of eleven other Kurosawa titles, all featuring the great Toshiro Mifune, in major markets across North America over the next 18. All will feature new prints and new subtitle translations. The titles are: "Rashomon," High and Low, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Red Beard, I Live in Fear, Stray Dog, Drunken Angel," and "The Bad Sleep Well."

Akira Kurosawa is seen as one of the most important and influential directors in cinema's history. After Kurosawa's Rashomon won the Grand Prize at the Venice Film Festival in 1951 and launched him to the forefront of the world film scene, he went on to win three Academy Awards®, including a Lifetime Achievement Academy Award in 1990, recognizing his extraordinary body of work. "The term 'giant' is used too often to describe artists. But in the case of Akira Kurosawa, we have one of the rare instances where the term fits," said director Martin Scorsese.

The Seven Samurai is thought to be one of the most influential films ever made. Contemporary filmmakers George Lucas, Steven Spielberg , John Woo and countless others have acknowledged the film as a primary influence on their own work. Scores of critics have placed the film on their "Ten Best of All Time" lists. Its story of a band of seven fighters recruited to help save a town from attacking bandits has achieved the status of legend throughout the world. The film was adapted into a Western by Hollywood as "The Magnificent Seven" in 1960.

"A Kurowsawa retrospective with all-new prints has been a long time coming," said Peter Becker of Janus Films. "We're grateful to Film Forum for devoting so much calendar time to the series, and we're sure Cowboy will do a great job all across the country."

"We are honored to be entrusted with this incredible collection of Kurosawa's masterpieces," said John Vanco of Cowboy Pictures. "In this era of video and digital media, it's important that this filmmaker in particular is appreciated through celluloid, and that is now possible on a national scale due to these new and newly subtitled prints. "Audiences who rely on English translation for Kurosawa's films will experience them all over again as if it were the first time."

Hidden Fortress ken ik niet, maar ik weet dat George Lucas' Star Wars erdoor werd geïnspireerd.

Ik heb alletwee de films.

Hidden Fortress is inderdaad een van de inspiratiebronnen van George Lucas voor 'Star Wars'. Hij heeft met name het idee voor C3PO en R2D2 (en volgens mij ook princess Leia) uit deze film. Als je de film ziet wordt dat erg duidelijk.

In Hidden Fortress zie je het verhaal vanuit het standpunt van de 2 'hulpjes' van de held. Dat maakt het naar mijn mening erg interessant. Je ziet namelijk de 'onderkant' van de oorlog, en de invloed op gewone burgers. Daarnaast is hij soms ook erg komisch.

Voor beide films geld dat je ze echt op het verhaal en de filmtechniek moet beoordelen.
En dan zijn ze wat mij betreft ijzersterk.

Een tip: bekijk de film; bekijk daarna de special features; bekijk daarna de film nog eens.

Ik heb de volgende Kurasawa's:

Seven Samurai (Criterion)
Yojimbo (Criterion)
Rashomon (Criterion)
Red beard (Criterion) (pre-order!)

Seven Samurai is briljant. De transfer is goed. De film is ruim 3 uur lang en geen moment saai. Let vooral op de camerahoeken, de plaatsing van mensen en truukjes met afstand. Kurasawa is hier heel erg sterk in! The Magnificent Seven is een verwesterde interpretatie van deze film. Toshiro Mifune acteert goed, maar de leider van de samurai is tevens erg goed in deze film (zijn naam ben ik even vergeten.)

Yojimbo is leuk. De transfer widescreen, maar niet anamorphic. Verder veel vuil en een aantal bijzonder storende krassen. Het verhaal is leuk, let weer op camerahoeken...etc. Last man standing is een kopie hiervan. Toshiro Mifune acteert goed.

Rashomon is visueel een meesterwerk. Goede transfer. Het verhaal is goed. Toshiro Mifune en de leider van de samurai uit seven samurai acteren beide goed.

Van Red Beard weet ik nog weinig. Het is geen samurai film. De reviews zijn goed.

Deze criterions zijn de moeite waard om te hebben, maar verwacht niet dat je met deze discs jouw HT kunt demostreren :-) Alhoewel...Rashomon is een heerlijke transfer...

Ik kwam op dit forum terecht omdat ik aan het zoeken was waar ik DVD films van Kurosawa en Tarkovsky en andere Russische filmers kan kopen. Ik zie dat je 4 Kurosawa films hebt, zijn die Regio 1? Ik ben op zoek naar Regio 2 versies.

Tevens ben ik op zoek naar de roemruchte televisieserie The Singing Detective van Potter, ook regio 2.

De vier DVDs zijn regio 1. Ik weet niet of deze ook in regio 2 te
verkrijgen zijn. Ik heb helaas weinig informatie over regio 2
discs...wellicht dat iemand anders deze vragen kan beantwoorden.

Er zit trouwens een mooie "samurai-box" aan te komen. Seven Samurai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, en Sanjuro in één box van Criterion.
