FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Director William Wyler Delves Into the Mind of a Psychopath in The Collector Coming to DVD for the First Time Oct. 1

Culver City, Calif. (July 24, 2002) - Twenty-five years before Hannibal Lecter stalked Clarice Starling onscreen, legendary film director William Wyler offered audiences a chilling portrait of a psychopathic killer in The Collector, which makes its first-ever appearance on DVD Oct. 1 from Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment. Wyler, who was nominated for 12 Oscars® and received four during his career, directs Oscar nominees Terence Stamp (Billy Budd The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) and Samantha Eggar (Dr. Dolittle) in this eerie and psychologically penetrating examination of a young man whose hobby is collecting butterflies. His demure façade cracks when he meets a strikingly pretty woman and decides to add her to his collection. Based on the novel by John Fowles, The Collector marked a coming of age both for Wyler and for the Hollywood studio system, which had rarely attempted to tackle story subjects as disturbing as the violent mind of a murderer. Wyler, the most nominated director in Oscar history, worked with writers Stanley Mann and John Kohn to deliver a deliberately paced film that became one of the most controversial releases of its time.

The Collector was nominated for three Academy Awards® - Best Actress, Best Director and Best Screenplay - and both Stamp and Eggar received top acting honors at the Cannes Film Festival for their work in the film. Eggar also won the year's Golden Globe award as best actress, and the film was nominated for three additional Golden Globes: Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay. Nearly 40 years after its initial release, The Collector continues to influence a generation of filmmakers. Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment offers Wyler's landmark thriller in a digitally mastered, widescreen format that preserves all The Collector's unexpected shocks and surprises.

The Collector: A Columbia Pictures Presentation. Also Starring Maurice Dallimore, Mona Washbourne. Produced by Jud Kinberg and John Kohn. Screenplay by Stanley Mann and John Kohn. Based on the Novel by John Fowles. Directed by William Wyler.
