Divio Inc., has introduced the NW901, a single-chip CODEC that enables manufacturers to design solid-state camcorders that combine 30 fps, MPEG-4 video, high fidelity AAC 2-channel audio, and up to 4-megapixel digital still camera functionality. Samples of the NW901 and the "SDcam" reference design will be available in August for camera manufacturers. Production volume is scheduled for Q4.

The NW901 offers camera-specific features and was designed for camera manufacturers to develop a new class of all-in-one solid-state camcorders. A solid-state camcorder utilizes solid-state FLASH memory cards to store video, audio and still images. FLASH memory storage replaces tape-based mechanical systems of traditional camcorders, allowing them to be significantly smaller, highly portable and cost-effective. A solid-state camcorder allows consumers to capture natural motion 30 fps video, high fidelity AAC audio and up to 4-megapixel still images, eliminating the need to carry multiple devices.

"The NW901 is a first-of-a-kind solution that enables an entirely new class of solid-state camcorders. By combining the best-of-class technologies in digital video, audio and still pictures, Divio will allow manufacturers to build this new generation of camera for the consumer market," said Steve Musallam, director of Marketing of Divio Inc. "The highly integrated NW901 reduces time-to-market and development costs and allows camera manufacturers to develop more innovative, compact and low-cost designs."
