Beste Mede SciFi liefhebbers........

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Forbidden Planet (1956)
The Last Man on Earth (1964)
The Ωmega Man (1971)
Soylent Green (1973)
Flight of the navigator (1986)

Melancholia was released in 2011 and featured an insanely talented cast consisting of Kirsten Dunst and the father-son combo of Stellan and Alexander Skarsgard. The story centers around a pair of sisters as a rogue planet is on the verge of colliding with Earth.
What puts this in line with Annihilation is the high drama that drives this movie. It outweighs the science fiction elements, but there's enough there to classify it within the genre. The depressing tone may drive some viewers away, but it is worth checking out.

Coherence, a group of people spots a comet passing over while at a dinner party. When that happens, strange occurrences begin and it creates multiple realities. From there, doppelgangers from the different realities crossover and it causes a tremendous amount of chaos. Not a visual stunner, but a thinker of a movie.

Sunshine is set in 2077 in a world where the sun is dying, meaning life won't be sustainable for much longer. A group of astronauts venture out into space to try and solve the issue, but things go awry.

Under The Skin Is nowhere near the biggest or most famous piece of Scarlett Johansson's lengthy filmography, but it is one of the best. In it, she plays an alien maneater of sorts. She travels around Scotland and lures guys into a void of darkness where they are consumed and killed.

Stalker is believed to be something of a remake of Annihilation. Directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, this makes perfect sense. His list of credits includes a bunch of strange science fiction movies.
The characters in Stalker go on an expedition into a mysterious territory where the laws of physics and biology change in unexplainable ways.

Ex Machina happens to be the only other directorial credit on Garland's ledger before Annihilation. It marked his real first foray into science fiction and he hit it out of the park. This film told the story of a programmer who tests an intelligent humanoid robot's ability to exhibit human behavior.

"Brainstorm" (1983) is a thought provoking sci-fi drama that explores the complex theme of thought sharing. It follows the unsettling story of some scientists as they develop a virtual reality device that records human thoughts and feelings. Lead researcher Michael Brace (Christopher Walken) has to deal with not only the government who wants to use the device for a different purpose, but also the tragic death of his co-worker Lillian, and his broken marriage.

Kafka (1991) begins as a classic film noir with witty dialogues, it soon becomes a suspenseful sci-fi thriller with gorgeous black and white cinematography. The conspiracy theory, the depiction of a bureaucratic system and the magnificent performance by Jeremy Irons enhance this claustrophobic tale of madness. It is not only a stylish drama with visually stunning photography, but also a philosophical study of existential anxiety and absurdism.

Liquid Sky (1982) is undoubtedly one of the weirdest sci-fi movies of all time. This low-budget gem of cult cinema is also an important movie of the post-punk and new wave movement of that era. This bizarre tale follows the story of Margaret, a drug addict fashion model. When a small flying UFO land at the top of Margaret's apartment, everything goes out of hand. These aliens, who came to Earth to look for some heroin, are now interested in Margaret's sex life. What follows is a series of psychedelic scenes involving murders, aliens and drugs.

The Endless (2017) tells the story of two brothers, Aaron and Justin, who have left a mysterious cult a long time ago. When they receive a videotape with footage from the cult, they decide to visit for one last time the cult in the countryside, where everyone seems to be very happy. Then everything gets out of control, as the two characters are trapped in this sacred place where even time is distorted. They have to not only find a way to escape, but also fight a battle against an unforeseen divine threat.
Despite the fact this is an underrated low-budget film, it is a great effort to create a magic universe of endless possibilities. It is not only a marvellous study of mysticism, but also an essay about faith and religion. Additionally, the experimental direction, the existential themes and the gorgeous scenery enhance this creepy and suspenseful atmosphere.

The Quiet Earth (1985) depicts a scientist working on a classified project about global energy. One day he wakes up to find himself alone in a post-apocalyptic world. He desperately tries to not only find other survivors, but also find out what happened. This is obviously a thrilling post-apocalyptic tale about human extinction and loneliness. It is not only a bleak depiction of a nightmarish world, but also a great study of existentialism and nihilism. This sci-fi tale also stands out as a social critique of the alienation of modern life.

Colossus : The Forbin Project (1970) follows the story of a scientist who has created a super smart computer named Colossus designed to control the nuclear missiles of the USA. However, a few moments after the official launch of this project, the Soviets announce that they have also created a similar intelligent computer named Guardian for the same purposes. When Colossus detects the existence of the Guardian computer, they start sharing information at an incredibly fast rate. This intelligent sci-fi tale isn't just an overlooked sci-fi drama about artificial intelligence and technophobia, but also a suspenseful political thriller about Cold War.

Alphaville (1965) is a philosophical sci-fi film directed by the legendary French filmmaker and auteur Jean-Luc Godard. the visionary director creates a bleak depiction of a dystopian world named Alphaville, a dystopian city where emotions, art and philosophy are not allowed. The technocratic dictatorship of Alphaville, that is ruled by a super smart Orwellian computer named Alpha 60, is based on rational thinking and logic. Despite the fact that there are no special effects, the pioneer of the French New Wave manages to create a genuinely disturbing sci-fi thriller. This isn't just a philosophical study of an Orwellian world, but also a minimalist crime story.

Je t'aime, je t'aime (1965) is one of the most underrated sci-fi films of all time. It is not only a suspenseful sci-fi adventure, but also a visually stunning arthouse gem of the French New Wave.
The film follows the story of Claude (Claude Rich), a tragic character who is recovering from an unsuccessful suicide attempt in a hospital. When he wakes up, he is approached by some secret agents of a classified project about time travelling. They have selected him as the perfect candidate to participate in a dangerous time travel experiment that has never been tested before. Unfortunately, the experiment goes terribly wrong, and Claude is trapped in the time machine forced to relive his past memories in a non chronological order.

The Face of Another (1966) is an existential sci-fi drama directed by the great Japanese filmmaker Hiroshi Teshigahara. The film tells the story of Mr. Okuyama, a businessman whose face was severely burnt and disfigured in an industrial accident. After this tragic accident, Mr. Okuyama is at the verge of a mental breakdown. Fortunately, his psychiatrist creates a lifelike mask to help the insecure Okuyama overcome his fear. But when Okuyama puts on the mask for a long time his personality changes radically.

World on a Wire (1973) is Rainer Werner Fassbinder's obscure sci-fi drama that aired as a two part television series for the German television in 1973.
Based on the novel "Simulacron-3" by Daniel Galouye, this philosophical sci-fi film depicts a dystopian future where a super smart computer called Simulacron is able to simulate a virtual world. There a number of artificial human beings live their own life, unaware that their world is a virtual reality.

Niet zo bekend, maar Sunshine (2007 geloof ik) inderdaad. Hierboven ook genoemd. Verhaal wordt tegen het einde een beetje raar. Maar scenery en soundtrack zijn prachtig.
