QuoteI was lucky enough to have the opportunity to see MadVR's Envy in action over labor day weekend. I would like to thank Mike Garrett for putting me in touch with MadVR. I am under NDA, so there are aspects I cannot discuss, but I got MadVR's permission to share some impressions. A bit of background - my theater is mainly composed of an RS4500 projector, Paladin DCR anamorphic lens, Lumagen Radience Pro, Oppo 203 player and a Kaleidescape Stato S. My screen is a 144" diagonal Studiotek 130 micro-perf screen. I have had my projector professionally calibrated and have been very happy with my system. I can't say enough good things in particular about Lumagen and Panamorph - their support is top notch and I feel both products warrant the investment - something I was concerned about when I initially installed them in my theater. Prior to seeing the Envy I did not know much about MadVR or the products they offer other than that they are well regarded on the AVS forums. I was put in touch with MadVR because I was conveniently located, and they were interested in testing the Envy in a user's home theater environment. I am by no means an expert, I am just a home theater enthusiast who happened to be in the right place at the right time, so please take my impressions that way and take it easy on me 

Once Ric of MadVR arrived we setup the MadVR in the theater. The first order of business was to test the Envy's connectivity with my source components and just make sure everything worked as expected. We used a test monitor initially so he could just focus on the sources. We tested the Kaleidescape first - something that has bit of a reputation for finicky HDMI connections. It worked right away and we were able to then test an AppleTV, Xbox One X, Playstation 4 Pro, Oppo 203, and a Tivo Mini. All of them worked with no issues on the monitor or when we switched over to testing with the RS4500. Once we confirmed everything worked and was rock solid we setup the Envy to run through the Lumagen to the RS4500 so we could take advantage of the Lumagen calibration settings.

At this point things got a little more fun and we viewed some source material with the Envy. Ric wanted to show me what the Envy was capable of when it comes to dynamic tone mapping. We ran these demo's through the Lumagen for the most part to make sure we were taking advantage of the 3D LUT data loaded in the Lumagen and then (by definition) we were also using the Lumagen for scaling with the Panamorph. I had been running the Lumagen on the latest firmware with my dynamic tone mapping settings adjusted for that based on feedback from the person who did my calibration.

We watched the Ready Player One race scene (chapter 3) and the beginning of Lucy from my Kaleidescape. We also watched some HDR demo scenes on a 4k bluray that Ric brought with him. We watched these scenes both through the Lumagen and then through the Envy connected to the Lumagen. In comparing the two next to each other I would say some scenes looked very similar, but there were others where the Envy image looked brighter and more dynamic. I certainly felt there was more of a 3D-like sense to some of the images through the Envy. I was certain the Envy must be crushing the highlights - otherwise how could the image appear brighter - but I specifically looked for that and I couldn't spot any issues with the highlights. I was very impressed with the image and tried to look at it as critically as I could. I really liked how the tone mapping when viewed through the Envy seemed to bring out some additional detail in the image - which is something I don't understand. Ric was pretty proud of the work MadVR did with their DTM and told me this is a feature they have implemented called "Highlight Recovery" and I wasn't imagining it.

The best material I saw was, unsurprisingly, the demo disc Ric brought with him. It consisted of some nature scenes and animals specifically shot to emphasize HDR. Some of the scenes had a valley or lake set in shadow with the sun setting. These scenes showed great contrast between the light and dark areas and you could see really nice detail in the tree line along a lake set in darkness while still seeing a bright sun cresting the trees in another part of the image. There were also some interesting very bright scenes like some moose moving through a snow covered plain while it was snowing. This image was very bright and punchy while retaining the detail of the image, including a forest in the background and details in the field. There was also another scene with fog moving through a field in the early morning. What struck me in this image was how defined the fog appeared and maintained definition in the image. The last part of the demo disc had different birds and owls that are well lit set to a black background. What impressed me the most about these images were the details in the feathers and how realistic the birds looked. When I compared these scenes using the Envy DTM to the Lumagen, most of the scenes seemed to be brighter in areas where there was a bright point in the image (e.g. the sun coming through the trees) while maintaining the contrast to the darker areas of the image. The image just seemed more vibrant and detailed. My understanding of DTM is there are compromises you have to make because you are working around the limitations in light from a projector, but it just seemed like the Envy DTM implementation was more pleasing to the eye for me based on what I was seeing with the test material. Clouds also seemed to benefit from the MadVR implementation of DTM - they looked slightly more 3D and detailed. There were also some scenes where I would say it was much more of a draw between the Lumagen and the Envy – but I don't know what the common element between those were. I think it might have been night cityscapes where there isn't a lot of light in the image. Again, we only compared a couple of scenes and the demo so it's tough to draw sweeping conclusions.

Please take my impressions with a grain of salt because they aren't meant to be a review, just the impressions I had in encountering a new technology. We ran the Envy through the Lumagen when demoing its DTM capabilities in order to take advantage of the calibration data. The Lumagen always received an SDR2020 signal from the Envy, but I didn't check the DTM status on the Lumagen to confirm it was off. When testing the Lumagen DTM we removed the Envy from the video path. For those who are curious, the RS4500 dynamic laser and tone mapping were off as well. Overall, I am really excited by what I saw and I can't wait to see what others think when they get to see it and are able to view it critically. I am going to tweak my Lumagen DTM settings a little to see if I can get it to look a little closer to what I saw out of the Envy, but I think the thing I am most impressed with is how Ric was able to bring the Envy into my theater, connect it to my equipment, enter the max brightness of the projector in the Envy, and it was able to have a significant impact on my image. It seemed pretty simple to setup - something I have grown to appreciate more as I get older/lazier.

After we went through the demo material and A/B'ed the Lumagen and Envy we were out of time so I didn't get to see the 4k upscaling or how it handles scaling for an anamorphic lens – things I am particularly interested in learning about. That covers what I am allowed to discuss. I cannot give any additional details and I won't respond to PMs about the Envy – I don't want to overstep the NDA. As you might note from my post count on AVS, I have been here a long time but I am more of a lurker. I will try and chime in once or twice, but real life is a little busy right now and my time is limited. Thank you again to Ric of MadVR and Mike Garrett of AVS for making it happen!
