Formac Electronic Inc. has introduced its Devideon Superdrive. The new FireWire DVD-R/RW & CD-RW combination drive is bundled with Formac's proprietary DVD authoring software, making it the world's first external solution to bring affordable DVD creation to the Apple Macintosh. Formac's Devideon Superdrive is compatible with Apple's FireWire G3, G4, iMac, PowerBook, and iBook computers and works on OS9 and OSX platforms.

"With the introduction of the Devideon Superdrive, Formac again leads the field in making high-end technology affordable to the Mac community." said Oliver Bergmann, Ph.D., chief executive officer and president of Formac Inc. "The latest product in Formac's form + function family is in line with the company's strategy to provide innovative solutions for the Macintosh as the center of the digital lifestyle."

Formac's Devideon software has been developed with the objective of ensuring maximum compatibility with existing hardware and Operating Systems, and is targeted at the large base of FireWire equipped Macintosh systems in the market. The application is currently restricted to work solely with Formac's Devideon Superdrive, based on an authorization process via Formac's proprietary FireWire bridge. The software's enhanced MPEG encoder converts iMovies and QuickTime files into the format required for DVD creation. With the help of a special control feature, users can directly adjust the encoder that allows them to tune the quality of video and audio output. Users can define video bit rates between 1.0 and 9.8 MBit and audio frequencies between 32KHz and 48KHz, giving them the ability to record more than 6 hours of video on one standard DVD media. Users can also preview their video projects with Apple's DVD player before burning the DVD. DVDs burned with Formac Devideon Superdrive can be played on set-top DVD players as well as on computers with DVD drives. The software supports NTSC as well as PAL video formats.

Using the latest in DVD- and CD-technology Formac Devideon Superdrive is based on Pioneer's new DVR-104 technology, the next generation superdrive. The new drive reads and writes DVD-R (write once), DVD-RW (re-recordable), CD-R and CD-RW. Formac Devideon Superdrive drive will be available mid-April for $549 SRP.
