Fujifilm and Olympus jointly introduced the smallest high-capacity digital storage card to date.
The xD-Picture Card is half the size of SmartMedia Card technology at 20.0 x 25.0 x 1.7 mm, but packs sixteen times the capacity, making it a reliable, durable and design friendly addition to the storage media category. The new card will be available in 16, 32, 64 and 128-megabyte (MB) formats, with a 256MB card expected to hit the market this winter. A 512MB and 1-gigabyte (GB) cards will be available in 2003.
"With the exponential growth in the digital camera market, Fujifilm needed to find a storage technology that satisfies the growing customer demand for greater memory, compact design and standardization" says Miriam Baltensperger, Digital Camera Products Manager, Fuji Photo Film Canada. "With xD-Picture Card compatibility, digital camera users will also be able to capture 256MB worth of digital images by the end of this year."
xD-Picture Cards:
* will offer a capacity range of 512MB to 2GB as of 2003, and are projected to reach capacities of up to 8GB in the future.
* offer a durable and reliable format that interfaces easily with PC card adapters and USB card readers (a CompactFlashâ„¢ adapter is in development)
* have a miniature size which will permit the development of even more compact cameras.
Prices will be competitive with other storage mediums currently on the market.
